Positive Self Talk: What are YOU Proud of?

by Nicole on February 9, 2012

What are you most proud of?

It’s SO easy for us to fall into the groove of…

  • I don’t drink enough water.
  • My meals aren’t portion controlled enough.
  • I didn’t workout enough this week.
  • My arms need some shaping up.

(Yes, some, but not all, of these thoughts are my own.)

We focus on the negative. Yes, we, as in me, too.

It’s funny because I try to come from a place of positive 99% of the time. It was my main philosophy when I was teaching… always talk in the positive. Instead of screaming, “Why did you just run sprint down the hallway at olympic speed?” I would say, “Wow I love how you wanted to get where you were going SO fast, but I would love for you to be safe and walk next time”.

I *may* do this with my husband too. For example:  “Wow, thank you for getting the clothes out of the dryer! I so appreciate it, but next time, if they are still soaking wet, could you put them back in for a couple more minutes instead of hanging them over our (wood) dining room table and chairs?” (true story)

In order to do this, you just need to shift your thinking. Focus on the positive, even if it’s a SMALL, tiny positive. Whether it’s a child, husband, friends or sibling, I guarantee they will be more likely to listen to you if you say the positive part first.

Plus, it’s SO much nicer to hear people say something nice first.

So with all this positive talk, why the heck do we not do this to ourselves?  Guess what, if you talk nicer to YOURSELF, you TOO, will be more likely to listen!  I feel like it’s easy for us to say nice things about others, especially people we love and care about. Not too often do we stop and say, “YES, I DO rock!”

Let’s take a time out from the negative self talk today, I encourage you to do this kind of talk with yourself. Tell yourself what you are MOST proud of; from the smallest accomplishment, to the largest.

Instead of saying, I don’t drink enough water. Say “Wow I’m proud I really worked on increasing my water from 1 water bottle to 2. Now I’m going to go for a third.”

I’ll start:

I’m proud of my dedication to exercise. I’m proud of moving to 100# on the cable machine for cable rows.

I’m proud that I feed my family AND myself healthy food everyday.

I’m proud that I started my own business

I’m telling you to stop and be PROUD of yourself! You ROCK. Yes, YOU. Tell us how.

Start HERE in the comments! What are YOU proud of? Could you use a talk shift, to focus in the positive?

positivity was part of the January and Feb challenges on my site…staying away from the negative and focusing on positive can only lead to better things :)

I stay positive about 85% of the time…

I’m proud that I’m still juice fasting :)

This is an AWESOME post. (and I totally giggled at the story about your husband and the dryer!).

But seriously — we *all* need to do more of this. Flipping our whole mindset into an uplifting and positive and supportive tone. Be your own best friend, right?

Great shift in focus, negative thoughts are such an easy thing to get sucked into and it’s draining!!

I’m proud that I can run, and run a long way (like my 50K last weekend)!

I am proud that I didn’t buy that pair of $20 running socks at the running store and instead got them for $10 at Dick’s Roosevelt Field.

it’s the small things.

I am also proud I didn’t eat that mini cake on the counter….yet.

LOVE this. It’s so true that we tend to beat ourselves down sometimes. I could definitely learn to shift to a more positive view! I’m proud that I got myself to the gym earlier when my mind was really not all for it haha. I felt so much better after going!

I’ve found that negative thoughts lead to negative behaviors, so I try my best to stay away, but sometimes that negativity creeps in and takes over. I am, however, proud that I’ve been eating really well this and working out when I said I would!

Excellent points, Nicole!

OK: I am proud of my excessive water-drinking. It can feel like a burden when I get headaches after “only” 6-8 glasses in a day, but it’s good that I regularly keep my body very well hydrated.

I am also proud, like you, of my commitment to exercise. It is an important item on my agenda 5 or 6 days out of every week, and I go to great lengths to make sure I keep my body active and strong.

I am proud that in 2011 I started my new life. I went from 262 lbs to 184 lbs in just over 4 months. I took it upon myself to gain control and create positive motivation in my life which I was lacking.

I am now training to be a Personal Trainer and living the healthy life I wanted and sharing it.
