Homemade Lotion & Lip Balm

by Nicole on January 9, 2014

With all the skin struggles I’d had over the past couple of months I finally decided to make my own lotion and lip balm. I have allergies to fragrance and meisthiazolinone (and a couple other things). Fragrance is almost impossible to avoid because there are even plant extracts in the most natural products. I have found fragrance free things like Clinque, that also avoid other ingredients I’m allergic too but they still result in eczema.

For awhile I was just using coconut oil. After I got out of the shower or washed my face I would dab my skin dry but leave it a tiny bit wet and then rub coconut oil on my skin. It never got my skin moist enough. I was still pretty dry.

I started to do some research and I came across a recipe from Wellness Mama. I’ve used a bunch of her recipes, so I figured it would be a reliable source..and it was. This is VERY easy. Like stupid easy.

I used this recipe for her homemade lotion.

For my lotion I used: almond oil, beeswax, coconut oil and cocoa butter. Nothing else.

All you do is combine ingredients in a container in a boiling water. I just used a mason jar. Follow her directions for complete instructions.

Lip Balm: Bees wax, coconut oil and cocoa butter. It’s the same process. Check out her recipe/process here. I just put it in a small mason jar because I didn’t have the containers she does.

For the lotion, it’s wonderful. I love it. My skin doesn’t feel dry anymore. Just a note, this lotion is on the thicker side. If you use a thin layer it absorbs well into your skin, but if you put a lot on (which I like to do at night) then it stays on your skin. Some may say it feels greasy, but I kind of love it. My skin loves it too. It’s been so soft.

I still have patches of eczema that come out of no where. They haven’t gotten really bad, so it’s not super hard to deal with. If you wanted to you can also add essential oils to make it smell nice or add something like calendula. I also bought aloe vera so I’m going to make one with that too.

I have to admit I do worry about when I’m old and wrinkly that I won’t be able to use eye cream and stuff like that. But I guess with this it’s all trial and error to see what works and what doesn’t. I’m also concerned with sun screen too for the summer, but I guess I could make my own too?

I never would have thought to make lotion or lip chap before, but if you are into making homemade things, then give this a try! It would also make a great gift.

If you have any questions, let me know!

I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while now, this seems like a good starter recipe. Thanks for sharing! I’m starting to become really concerned about parabens and seeking healthier beauty alternatives.

I LOVE this idea and seriously am going to try pronto. Not sure where you get some bees wax though?? The sad part is my lips are SO dry right now, but I don’t have any natural balms in my house at the moment, so I’m in torturous throbbing pain. I think I know what I need to do!

I got mine from amazon. Just make sure you get 100% beeswax. the first one I bought had other fillers!
