Running Trials & Nike FlyKnit Sneakers!

by Nicole on August 14, 2012

How’s your morning going? I just finished a later breakfast and a whole lot of watermelon. I’m going to be so sad when you can’t get great watermelon anymore. When does that even happen? Hopefully not for a long time.

This morning I went for my run first thing, like I have been doing for months now. I’m looking forward to not being tied to a run first thing in the morning. (I go first thing because the pressure on my bladder isn’t out of control then…) It got me thinking that I’m only about 3 weeks into the third trimester, but running has greatly changed for me.

I wrote about my running plans a couple of weeks ago and it’s even changed since then. I’ve noticed that now it takes a lot longer for me to get warmed up. If I start running too long (as in more than 5 minutes) too soon I notice that I tend to get round ligament pain. If I ease into it, running 2 minutes, walking 1 minute a couple of times it’s MUCH more comfortable and then I can increase my intervals later in the run.  (I do wear a belly support from Medula. I paid $20.00 for it. Worth it.)

I’m trying to be very laid back about this whole thing. I don’t really WANT to stop running before 36 weeks, but if I have to I will. I’m playing different games in my head to have fun with different intervals.

This is what I did today:

Slow Pregnant Interval Run

  • walk 4 minutes to warm up
  • run 2 minutes, walk 1 minute (for a total of 2 times)
  • run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute (for a total of 3 times)
  • run 4 minutes, walk 1.5 minutes (for a total of 4 times)
  • run 5 minutes, walk 2 minutes (1 time)
  • run 6 minutes, walk 5-10 minutes to cool down

Other runs I’ve been doing is run for 5 minutes, walk for 2 minutes and repeat until I finish my loop (about 4.6 miles).

Today was great because I felt like I beat being bored. I plan on doing this for the next 5.5 weeks…subject to change of course!

In other news, I got the opportunity to try out Nike FlyKnit sneakers in this awesome blue color along with their GPS watch. Holy amazingness. I’ve taken them out a couple of times, but don’t want to totally transition from my Brooks while pregnant. The last thing I want to do is flare up my IT band.

The highlights of them are: (from website)

  • Lightweight, breathable one-piece upper that moves with the foot
  • Flywire threads that wrap the midfoot for better fit and support
  • Nike Zoom technology in the heel and forefoot for responsive cushioning
  • Weight: 8.4 ounces (men’s size 10)

It took Nike four years to make this shoe…and it’s pretty amazing. I personally love the snug fit and how light they are. They MAY be an issue for people with wider feet (I don’t have that). They also come in men’s sizes and run a bit small. (I’m usually a 7.5 W and I was an 8 in these and it’s nothing to do with pregnancy since all my other shoes still fit.) I also have to admit I LOVE how pretty and cool looking they are. Danny was PRETTY jealous.

I also LOVE the Nike GPS watch.  You track your time, distance, pace and calories burned. It also shows your mapped route, with pace data, and changes in elevation on You can sign right into and link up your watch so you can check out your past runs. It’s pretty freaking awesome.

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this review, but I did recieve the FlyKnits & watch for free. Thank you Nike!

Now that was a LOT of talk about running. I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going!

I think my biggest thing with running is the boredom. I’m working on it tough. I like your interval split! The shoes are super cute! I tried on some Nikes the other day and they were soooo comfortable! I’m glad you’re feeling well! I can’t believe you’re almost done. I can’t wait to see the little one!

I’ve been feeling the same way with running lately {I’m almost 29 weeks} and I’ve had to do a lot more frequent walking breaks to keep the pain {and pressure. Baby is super low} at bay. I don’t want to give it up yet, that’s just too long without running! I hope it keeps going well for you!

Hooray! Can’t wait for my change purse…thank you Nicole! I never win anything :) maybe my luck is changing!
You also have me very interested in those shoes. I’ve always worn New balance but I am thinking I need to switch it up because it doesn’t take long after I get a new pair to start having some foot pain in the middle of a long run. Maybe I’ll give Nike a try for my next pair.

congrats on still running during pregnancy! those flyknit shoes are definitely cool looking – i’ll be curious to hear what you think once you break ‘em in! i’m in the market for new shoes so i’m gobbling up shoe reviews like no ones business right now :)

You are being so smart with your running…and listening to your body!!!! Running during pregnancy is not easy so even just getting out there as often as you do should do is a success in my opinion. So glad that you have had such a comfortable pregnancy so far.

I think it’s just about time for me to get a running band. I’ve noticed twice now that I’ve gotten a tweak of pain in my lower, side ab. I think yesterday’s could have been prevented though if I had just finished my run, like I had planned to! I stopped in my last mile for a sip of water and it’s when I restarted that I got the pain!! Gah!
