My Favorite Baby Items

by Nicole on December 3, 2012

My blog is so life centered right now, mainly because my food isn’t all that interesting. I have been cooking every night, but it’s such throw together meals. I do have my eye on a couple of recipes though, so I’ll keep you posted if and when I actually make them.

I’m going to try and get back into taking pictures of my food next week, but it’s so dark when I eat, they certainly are not pretty. The point will be how I’m incorporating quick, easy & healthy meals into a busy schedule!

Anyway, after 6 weeks of being a mom, I’ve come up with my favorite and most used baby times.

My favorite baby items:

Bugaboo Cameleon Stroller: This is a pricey item, for sure, but it is literally worth every penny. You can push it one handed, which comes in handy when you have things in your arms/hand. It closes super easily. It has so many amazing features. The only down side is that when you have the basinet in, the under carriage storage is hard to access, but that’s such a small downside for me.

Muslin (Swaddle) Blankets: Liv loves to be swaddled. We swaddle her when she shows signs of sleepyness (usually yawning, but can be a certain cry as well). It signals sleep time to her (or at least we think it does!). Dan and I have been trying to do swaddle, dark room and rocking to get her to sleep and it works pretty well. We have a bunch of different brands: Lollipop, Anden & Anais and one other kind that I forget the name of. I love them all…and they are super pretty.

Glider: I live in this glider. I love it. I didn’t think I would sit in it so much. It’s super comfy and Liv loves to be rocked (glided?)

Diaper Genie: I love this thing. It’s such an extra, but I love how you don’t see the diapers OR smell them.

Burp Clothes: I am never anywhere without multiple of these things. Well, I was without them once in the car and there was projectile spit up…lesson learned. Did you know how much babies spit up???? I didn’t. (Spit up is completely normal. I needed to be reminded of this 2035984345 times in the first 3 weeks.*Side note: I know there are times when it’s not normal, but Liv’s is.)

Pj’s with zippers: In the middle of the night I hate dealing with snaps, but most pjs do have snaps. The couple we have with zippers are great.

Pacis: I know not everyone gives their baby a paci, but Liv loves hers. She doesn’t take it all the time, but it does sooth her when she’s upset most of the time. In our case, we love the paci and feel like it gives her time to suck when she’s not hungry.

Rock n Play: This is what Liv sleeps in at night and for her naps. It’s very cozy and comfy and is at an angle. Her first couple of nights at home were rough in her bassinet. She didn’t seem to like it at all. At the recommendation of our pediatrician we borrowed this from a friend (thanks Ashley!). She’s loved it ever since. Eventually we’ll transition her into her crib, probably around 3 months. It’s also super portable. It folds up and we bring it wherever we need to.

Music: We play a lot of Enya and Glee for Liv. Now also Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas CD. I don’t know whether she likes it or not, but I do. I love sitting and singing to her (even though she probably falls asleep just to avoid hearing me.) Right now I just use my cell phone, but we’re going to get a shuffle for her room.

Bobby Lounger: I love to use this to put on the floor when I’m cooking in the kitchen or getting dressed/putting makeup on. I also have put it in the bathroom in desperate times. :)

Mom friends: I think I would go crazy without talking to other mom’s. I don’t have many mom friends but the couple I do have are so precious to me! Please if you’re a new mom, get some mom friends. If you don’t know anymore…get on twitter and make some!

And along with loves comes things I’m not in love with:

Not so in love with:

Sun blockers/shade for car: Do these work for anyone? I have them up, but I feel like the sun is NEVER at the right angle for these to actually work. I’ve just been putting the muslin blankets over the side of her car seat but sometimes they fall off.

Moby wrap: I’m not giving up on this yet. I’ve used it a couple of times and she’s liked it ok. I tried to switch from the newborn to the kangaroo hold but she’s hated it. I’m going to keep trying because I love the idea of it, but so far it’s completely hit or miss for us.

From my husband:

He loves: the rock n’ play, swaddle blankets, glider and paci. He hates: car seat (because she always cries in it), and baby jackets (hah…not sure about this…).  Swing is alright he says.

So there it is, in 6 weeks I’ve always made up my mind about what I love and what Liv loves. I’m sure it will be different for the next baby, but these are basically our essentials for now. What are your favorite and most needed baby items?

H loves her paci, too! I know a lot of people don’t like them, but they’ve helped her soothe herself from early on and I love ‘em! That being said, I’ll be having to break the habit soon, but it’s worth it for all the comfort they brought her!

I feel like I could have written this post (for the most part). We have the A&A wraps and LOVE them…they are great for a light blanket too at night =)
The sun shades never ever ever worked for me in the car. I tried THREE brands / types and nothing. The zippers are a godsend! A lot of 3-6 month pjs are more user-friendly – i love the gap ones b/c they are just a top and bottoms so they slip on super easily!!
I love how you write about Liv – you seem so content, happy, and well adjusted to mommyhood…you’ll be pregnant with #2 before you know it =) HAHA

I’m grateful for our friendship btw…even though this is #2, it’s so much more fun this time having someone to share all the events/details with =) Now we just need to schedule a day to meet up!

She is adorable! <3 Keep trying with the Moby, maybe it was just me but I seriously LOVED it and felt it totally came in handy (literally!!) when I needed to get things done and my little one wanted to snuggle on my chest. :-)

I have to agree that pj’s with zippers are so much more convenient – I wish I had more
